September 30, 2011 6:44 AM | News

The topic of “SlutWalks” will be discussed by a panel of University of Manitoba scholars this afternoon.

The free event is open to the public and will look at whether reclaiming words can empower women.

Scholars Brenda Austin-Smith from the Department of English, Film and Theatre, Jila Ghomeshi from the Department of Linguistics, Meena Krishnamurthy from the Department of Philosophy, and Karen Busby from the Faculty of Law.

The discussion will run from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Concourse Lounge of University College (220 Dysart Rd.) on the U of M’s Fort Garry campus.

Winnipeg’s own SlutWalk is set for October 15 at 2 p.m. About 2,300 have already RSVP’d on the event’s Facebook page to march from the Burton Cummings Theatre to the Manitoba legislature to march against blaming sexual assault victims for the clothes they wear.
