Bisons’ Goaltender Picks Up Canada West Honours

October 5, 2011 7:18 AM | Sports

With the Manitoba Bison men’s hockey team just getting their season underway on September 30, their second-year goaltender has already been recognized by the conference.

Joe Caligiuri was named Canada West Male Athlete of the Week on Tuesday — the first Manitoba male athlete to earn the honour for the 2011-12 season.

The 22-year-old Winnipeg native helped lead the Bisons to back-to-back wins on September 30 and October 1, and was the starting goaltender in consecutive 2-0 victories on the road.

Caligiuri made 25 and 21 saves in 120 scoreless minutes.

The Bisons have a conference bye this weekend and then head to Edmonton from October 14-15 to face the Golden Bears in a two-game set.

The first home games will be October 21-22 against Regina at Max Bell Arena.

UPDATE: Caligiuri has also been named CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) Male Athlete of the Week.
