A 59-year-old Winnipeg man was killed Sunday evening while attempting to avoid hitting a skunk on a rural highway.

RCMP say the man was travelling eastbound in an SUV on Provincial Road 313 near Wendigo Road in the RM of Lac du Bonnet at about 7 p.m. The vehicle lost control and rolled while attempting to avoid the animal.

The man’s wife — and only other passenger in the vehicle — was taken to Pinawa Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. She was later released.

Both occupants were wearing seat belts at the time.

The driver’s name hasn’t been released.
