AVCO Cup (HOCKEYGODS.COM)
Those attending today’s Winnipeg Santa Claus Parade will be able to see the coveted AVCO Cup in-person.
The championship trophy of the original World Hockey Association (1972-1979) will be on display at 4 p.m. on Portage Avenue between Smith Street and Garry Street for photo opportunities. Sport Manitoba is also organizing some pre-parade fun, including street hockey, basketball, rhythmic gymnastics.
The AVCO Cup was retired after the WHA ceased operations in 1979. The Winnipeg Jets claimed the cup on three occasions during the Bobby Hull era, including the final league championship against Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers.
The parade begins at 5 p.m.
