Missing Boater Sought After Boat Flips on Lake Winnipeg

November 15, 2011 10:32 AM | News

RCMP are searching for a missing boater today after two men flipped their boat on Lake Winnipeg on Monday.

The boaters — who were not wearing life jacktets at the time — hit a reef at about 2:30 p.m. One of the boaters was able to swim to the reef, while a 66-year-old Niverville man who was last seen floating in the water, remains missing.

The pair were making their way back to Bloodvein from Matheson Island when the mishap happened.

The man who made it to the reef was spotted by a local fisherman about an hour later and taken to the Bloodvein Nursing Station. He suffered non-life threatening injuries.

RCMP along with search and rescue teams are continuing to search for the other man, and have brought in a CC130 Hercules aircraft to assist them.

The man’s boat and a number of items were located, but the boater himself was not.

Rescuers aborted their search on Monday due to poor weather and a lack of visibility.
