Manfred and Evelyn Knochel -- the East Kildonan homeowners who donated their massive Colorado Blue Spruce to the city -- take part in a tree-lighting ceremony at City Hall on Wednesday, November 16, 2011. The Knochel's had their 41-foot tree cut down from their front yard this past Sunday to be decorated for the holiday season. About 60 other residents volunteered to have their trees donated, but there can only be one tree chosen each year. More than 6,000 LED lights were placed on the 27-year-old tree before the switch was flipped on live TV. (TED GRANT / CHRISD.CA)

Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz and Global Winnipeg weather specialist Kate Gajdosik take part in the tree-lighting ceremony on Wednesday. Katz made an $1,800 donation to the Salvation Army's Toy Mountain campaign on behalf of the City of Winnipeg. (TED GRANT / CHRISD.CA)
