Similar to calling 311 for municipal issues, or 911 for emergencies, Manitoba motorists can now dial 511 to get up-to-date road and weather information from across the province.

Transportation Minister Steve Ashton unveiled the service in Brandon on Wednesday during the Association of Manitoba Municipalities annual convention.

“The new 511 traveller information service will provide drivers with the most up-to date information on driving conditions, helping families ensure they get to their end destinations safely and giving truckers the ability to plan their routes more efficiently,” Ashton said.

Along with the service is a new website at MB511.ca — featuring an interactive map with links to five areas of the province (southeast, southwest, central east, central west and north) for visitors to see current road conditions. The map also includes information for neighbouring provinces and states including Ontario, Saskatchewan, North Dakota and Minnesota.
