City Rivals Meet in Annual Duckworth Challenge

December 1, 2011 7:48 AM | Sports

Two cross-town rivals will clash tonight in the 21st annual Duckworth Challenge, pinning two city university basketball teams against each other.

The University of Manitoba Bisons and University of Winnipeg Wesmen will go at it at the U of M’s Investors Group Athletic Centre beginning at 6 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men).

Watch the Bisons tee up tonight’s games…

The two teams have always been fierce competitors, and the yearly challenge is a chance for both sides to let off a little steam and prove which school is superior — at least on the basketball court.

The challenge is split into two parts, with the basketball portion going tonight, and the two volleyball teams meeting on February 1, 2012. The Bisons retained the Duckworth Challenge trophy in the 2010-11 season, winning both volleyball matches, as well as the men’s basketball match.

The challenge for bragging rights has a long-standing history, originally beginning in 1992.

Tickets are available at the door for $10 (adults, students, seniors) and $5 for children six and up.
