A 48-year-old man is missing and presumed drowned after the snowmobile he was operating broke through the ice on Lake Winnipegosis.

The incident happened Saturday at about 10:30 p.m. when the man and his 38-year-old female passenger were returning from a fishing trip.

Rescuers recovered the woman after she spent several hours in the water. She was taken to hospital for treatment of exposure.

The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team is currently preparing to look for the man. Both occupants of the snowmobile were from the Winnipegosis area.

RCMP are reminding snowmobilers to use extreme caution when riding on waterways, as lakes and rivers are reported to have thin ice conditions and open water.

UPDATE: Monday, December 12 — The man’s body has been recovered by family members. His name will not be released.
