A 47-year-old woman who allegedly travelled from western Manitoba to the United States with her son is facing child abduction charges.

Blue Hills RCMP were alerted Wednesday to a possible parental child abduction involving a seven-year-old boy from the Brandon area. The father reported his estranged wife had taken the child, along with many personal effects and their passports.

After a brief investigation involving several Canadian and American law enforcement agencies, the 47-year-old mother of the boy was arrested at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Thursday. Officials were acting on the strength of a Canadian warrant when they placed her under arrest.

The father of the boy has since flown to Los Angeles to reunite with his son and prepare to bring him back to Canada.

The woman’s name isn’t being released to protect the child’s identity. She will be extradited back to Canada to face child abduction charges.
