Flood season is several months away, but the Canadian Red Cross in Manitoba is already preparing by calling on disaster response volunteers.
Disaster volunteer training will begin later this month, and include a new role of managing shelters during major evacuations. Volunteers will be required to work during regular office hours, or during evenings and weekends.
Volunteers with human resource experience are needed to assist with recruitment, screening, placement and scheduling of volunteers. Those with logistics experience are needed to help with the purchasing, transportation, and warehousing of materials. Individuals with leadership, project management and planning skills are also required. Volunteers are also needed to help with the provision of comfort, compassion, and basic necessities to people who are affected by disaster such as widespread flooding.
To register as a volunteer or to request further information, contact Laverne Leenhouts at (204) 982-6731 or e-mail mb.volunteer@redcross.ca.
