After a mild spell caused a delay in its opening, the Assiniboine Credit Union River Trail is finally ready for skaters to enjoy.

Watch:

Officials with The Forks opened the trail Tuesday, which will eventually extend from where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet all the way to Churchill Drive.

“This year we’re going to have a fantastic trail,” said Clare MacKay, spokesperson for The Forks. “It’s only going to be 3.2 kilometres for now, but we hope to get a little bit on the Assiniboine as well.”

Walking and cross-country ski trails on the river will open in the next few weeks. The warming hut building competition will begin on Thursday, where five one-of-a-kind designs will start to take shape. Once complete, they will act as shelters for skaters who need a reprieve from the cold.

Besides the trail, Arctic Glacier Winter Park provides 1.2 kilometres of trails on land at The Forks, including a toboggan run and two skating rinks. Activities at the park will run until March, weather permitting.

Current conditions of the trail will be updated daily at RiverTrail.ca.
