The University of Manitoba will host more than 450 athletes from ten different universities across the country this weekend in the third annual Bison Classic track and field meet.

Watch:

The two-day meet on Friday and Saturday will seek to find qualifiers for the 2012 CIS Championships to be held in Winnipeg March 8-10. While the Bisons haven’t qualified any athletes yet, head coach Claude Berube is confident that will change by Saturday.

“I expect to see great competition in all the events and to see many athletes and relay teams achieve their automatic qualifiers,” Berube said.

Athletes in this weekend’s meet represent Victoria, Lethbridge, Calgary, Alberta, Regina, Saskatchewan, Lakehead, Trinity Western, Windsor and Manitoba. Several club athletes will also compete, many of which may go on to represent Canada at the London 2012 Olympic Games this summer.

The Bison Classic will get underway Friday from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., while the bulk of the events will be held Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. All events are at the Max Bell Fieldhouse on the U of M’s Fort Garry campus. Admission is free.
