Accounting students from the University of Winnipeg reached the final round of the Gathering of Accounting Academics, Professionals and Student (GAAPS) competition this past weekend — the third time in three years U of W students have made it to the finals.
Jewanjot Singh Bhullar, Sami Moujani, Vidhur Sharma and Casey Berthon were given a two-hour task to provide a comprehensive cost analysis and recommendation on a mock situation. Their task: an American granite company that makes statues of geese is floundering, but the owner is emotionally attached to the product. The group also had to decide whether the owner should continue or not.
In the end, the granite geese survived. The UWinnipeg team provided recommendations as to how the owner could better manage inventory and costs, which were well received by the judges.
