The bizarre scene that tied up traffic at Winnipeg’s James Richardson International Airport on Monday night was tied to an alleged suicide pact.
Winnipeg police received information from British Columbia RCMP that a 33-year-old woman was travelling to Winnipeg to meet a man she had met online. The two were to mutually harm themselves, according to police. The woman was taken into custody before she could board in Vancouver.
Police responded to Winnipeg’s air terminal building at around 9:45 p.m., where they found the man waiting for her. His vehicle contained a quantity of hazardous liquid chemicals, which the HazMat team discovered to be sealed in containers.
The man was arrested without incident at about 11 p.m.
Police say the two didn’t plan on harming anyone else and no charges are pending.
No flights were affected by the incident, which police had cleared by around midnight.
