Emergency Responders Face Off in Blood Donor Challenge

March 5, 2012 7:59 AM | News

A three-way challenge between the RCMP, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and Winnipeg police will see which team can raise the most blood donations.

The 2012 Sirens for Life Challenge kicks off today at 11 a.m., where the annual emergency responders’ blood donation challenge will get underway at Canadian Blood Services’ Winnipeg blood donor clinic.

“As police officers, we see the need for blood donations firsthand at the scene of collisions and other traumatic incidents,” said RCMP Chief Superintendent Scott Kolody. “This friendly competition among emergency responders aims to increase not only blood donations but also awareness of the need to donate.”

The WFPS gave 188 blood donations in 2011, beating the WPS by only four donations. This year is the first time the RCMP will be competing.

Manitobans can join the challenge by donating blood in support of an emergency services team until April 7. Public donations will count towards the 2012 challenge.
