Manitoba Hydro Warns of Fraudulent Telephone Scam

March 6, 2012 9:39 AM | News

Manitoba Hydro is warning customers to be vigilant about a telephone scam making the rounds from a party claiming to be calling on behalf of Hydro.

Solicitors are trying to sell a “power saving device,” which they say can save customers a substantial amount on their electricity bills. In some cases, they are also asking for credit card numbers. Hydro never asks for credit card information over the phone.

Hydro saves such a device has not been approved by them or the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or CSA International, meaning the device may not be safe and comply to relevant standards.

If you receive this type of call, you should report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or AntiFraudCentre.ca.
