Abandoned Baby Girl Found in Portage la Prairie

March 19, 2012 11:40 AM | News

A seven-month-old baby girl is safe and sound after being abandoned by her mother in Portage la Prairie on Saturday.

RCMP say a man was riding on his bicycle around 3:45 a.m. when he heard what appeared to be a cat behind a school. Upon riding closer, he discovered a baby lying in some leaves wearing only her sleeper.

The baby was wrapped in the man’s jacket until police and paramedics arrived, where they transferred the child to hospital for treatment of exposure to the cold.

A search of the area located an abandoned baby carriage and the intoxicated 28-year-old mother. The area woman is facing charges of abandoning a child and failing to provide the necessities of life.

She was released on a promise to appear. Her name isn’t being released to protect the infant’s identity.
