WINNIPEG — Dog owners who frequent the Birds Hill Provincial Park area are on edge after a dog was mauled to death in front of its owner on Tuesday.

The attack happened as the roughly 11 lb Chihuahua was walking without its leash near the tree line in the early morning hours just south of the park.

An online Manitoba dog forum said the wolf was the size of a small deer and wasn’t scared off by the pet’s owner.

The wolf reportedly dragged the pooch into the forest without hesitation as its owner watched helplessly.

A spokesperson with Manitoba Conservation said the department is looking into information about a large animal attacking a dog in the park, but hasn’t confirmed the incident.

At least one other wolf sighting has been reported this week at the park, located just north of Winnipeg off Highway 59.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported the dog was 30 lbs.
