The Winnipeg Goldeyes have signed veteran infielder Yurendell de Caster to their roster.
The 32-year-old reached the Major Leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates for three games in 2006 and has played all or part of the last seven seasons at the Triple-A level. With Reynosa of the Mexican League last season, he hit .338 with six home runs and 47 RBI in 90 games.
“He has a lot of experience and he made it to the big leagues,” Goldeyes manager Rick Forney said. “He can play multiple positions, but right now, for our club, we see him fitting in at first base and hitting in the middle of the line up.”
de Caster also played for the Netherlands in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classic events.
In another move, infielder Scott Thorman informed the Fish he has signed with Yucatan of the Mexican League. The Goldeyes retain his reversionary rights, should he wish to play at the independent level following the Mexican League season, which ends in July.
