Ground was broken Monday on a parcel of land in St. James that will soon be the new Hampton Inn Winnipeg Airport hotel.

The 135-room property at 730 Berry Street is being developed by Hampton Hotels and will be owned and operated by Sargent Berry Hospitality Inc. The six-storey hotel will have a salt water pool and meeting space, along with other usual amenities.

“Hampton Hotels’ entry into the Winnipeg market is a welcome addition to our local hotel inventory and provides more choice for business and leisure travelers alike,” said Chantal Sturk-Nadeau, senior vice-president of Tourism Winnipeg. “Internationally recognized brands such as these positively impact our ability to attract tourism and elevate perceptions of the city as an international destination.”

Sturk-Nadeau says the addition of the Hampton Inn will positively impact the industry, attracting local and international tourists alike.

The hotel is expected to open next year and create 35 new jobs.
