New rules regulating Manitoba’s cell phone industry meant to protect consumers will come into effect September 15.

Consumer Affairs Minister Jim Rondeau said Monday that the new legislation, which was previously passed last year, is some of the best consumer protection in Canada for cell phone contracts.

“These new rules will ensure Manitobans will have clearer cell phone contracts, fair cancellation fees and reasonable rules for unilateral changes to contracts,” Rondeau said.

Wireless providers can be fined up to $1,000 for a first offence if they don’t comply with the legislation.
