Man Killed in Out-of-Control Grass Fire Near Portage

April 27, 2012 10:43 AM | News

A grass fire turned fatal for a 78-year-old man Thursday who was attempting to perform a controlled burn.

RCMP responded to a rural residence southeast of Portage la Prairie just after 2 p.m., where they found the out-of-control fire, which had spread to a shed on the man’s property.

Firefighters put out the blaze and located the man deceased inside the shed. His name isn’t being released and an autopsy has been scheduled.

The Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner is investigating.

RCMP are reminding the public of the danger of grass fires, especially given the dry conditions in the province lately.
