New life will be given to the Merchants Hotel at 541 Selkirk Avenue.

The Manitoba government has purchased the property in an effort to revitalize it into a retail, education and housing complex.

The North End Community Renewal Corporation (NECRC) took possession of the hotel on April 29. The province will spend $1.3 million to transform the building and support 20 partner organizations as they redevelop it in a multi-use facility.

“Selkirk Avenue is central to the life of North End residents and we look forward to revitalizing the neighbourhood and renewing the welcoming spirit of community,” said Rob Neufeld, executive director of NECRC. “Many people have worked diligently and look forward to seeing this project begin. This is truly a celebration of collaboration, energy and vision.”

Plans for the three-storey building will be finalized over the next six months.
