Police are trying to piece together what happened after a 14-year-old boy was shot while in a canoe about 30 kilometres south of Split Lake Cree Nation.

RCMP say the incident happened shortly after 7 p.m. on Saturday when the boy and a 23-year-old Split Lake man were returning from duck hunting. A firearm discharged, striking the youth and forcing the canoe to capsize in shallow water near the shore. Both males made it to shore and used ATVs to get out of the bush.

The boy was taken to the local nursing station and later transferred to Winnipeg, where he’s listed in stable condition.

Police are continuing to investigate.
