Semi Hauling Hogs Rolls Near Manitou

May 24, 2012 3:33 PM | News

A semi-trailer truck carrying hogs rolled into the ditch Thursday after the driver lost control.

RCMP say the driver was heading north on Highway 244 at around noon about five kilometres north of Manitou at the time.

A number of the 180 hogs being transported were either injured or killed in the crash. Those that survived were corralled and have been transported from the scene. Inspectors with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency are also at the site assisting with the animals.

The 42-year-old man driving the truck from the RM of Pembina suffered minor injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but police say alcohol has been ruled out as a factor.

As of 3 p.m., Highway 244 was closed to traffic as motorists were being rerouted.
