West Broadway to Undertake Composting Pilot Project

May 24, 2012 9:05 AM | News

Apartment tenants in the West Broadway area will soon be able to compost after a new project rolled out by the West Broadway Development Corporation.

Greenheart Housing Co-op, located at the corner of Sherbrook Street and Portage Avenue, will receive two all-season wooden compost bins and 24 compost kits on Thursday, May 31. The kits will include containers to collect kitchen scraps, and information about all-season composting. They will be distributed to residents.

“The distance to your nearest bin is not the only barrier to composting,” said compost coordinator Bowen Smyth. “We designed the kits to help participants continue composting after the initial excitement wears off and tossing organic waste into the garbage seems more convenient.”

The project includes a high-density community compost pilot which aims to engage over 400 participants — including residents in five apartment buildings — and to divert at least 90 tonnes of organic waste from landfills.
