The federal government is spending $6.5 million to upgrade VIA Rail’s Winnipeg Union Station.

Charleswood-St. James-Assinniboia MP Steven Fletcher on Friday said renovations will include upgrades to passenger waiting areas, new fully accessible public washrooms, exterior improvements, and upgraded security systems.

Union Station earned environmental certification from the Building Owners and Managers Association of Manitoba last year, and was added to the city’s heritage buildings list in 1980.
