A Winnipeg diver has returned from her deep sea adventures and will share stories from her journey with local school children on Thursday.
Mavis McRae was the only Canadian amongst nine other divers to embark on the Mission Blue Sylvia Earle Alliance (SEA) Bahamian Reefs Hope Spots expedition through the Exuma Cays in the Bahamas. McRae’s mission is to raise awareness and education about marine protected areas or ‘hope spots’ that are unique places critical to the health of the ocean.
“There are only 10% of the world’s large fish populations left and their habitats are being damaged by development and pollution,” McRae said.
McRae is an entrepreneur-in-residence at the University of Manitoba and will visit École Robert H. Smith School on Thursday morning. She will continue her educational tour in the next few weeks by visiting schools across the country.
