Inmate Dies Following Stabbing at Stony Mountain Institution

A 69-year-old man serving time at the Stony Mountain Institution has died as the result of a stabbing on June 12.

RCMP say two inmates were involved in the incident, which is being treated as a homicide.

The man was transported to hospital in Winnipeg and succumbed to his injuries on June 25.

The name of the victim hasn’t been released.

UPDATE: The deceased has been identified as Damiano Cosmo Valente. At the time of his death, Valente was serving a five-year, eight-month sentence that had commenced on September 14, 2009.

UPDATE: July 26, 2012Byron Alden Jacob, 24, has been charged with second-degree murder. The cause of Valente’s death has been attributed to a single stab wound.
