June 29, 2012 12:15 PM | Sports

Inner-city youth will have the opportunity to play in a drop-in basketball program starting Saturday.

The University of Manitoba is launching the free Summer Weekend Inner-City Supervised Hoops (SWISH) program at its centrally-located Bannatyne campus.

Kids can play every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. from June 30 to August 11 in Parking Lot E (McDermot Avenue at Tecumseh Street). Transportation is also being provided at no cost.

Supervised activities for 12-18-year-olds will include three-on-three basketball, dribbling and passing competitions with prizes, running clinics, and pickup games.

In the event of rain, the program will move indoors to the Joe Doupe Gym. A shade tent will also be set up and water provided.

Volunteers from U of M Bison Sports and the basketball community will supervise the program.
