On-street parking in certain downtown areas will cost you more if a proposed rate hike is approved.

The City of Winnipeg is looking at increasing parking in high demand areas, such as in the Exchange District, from $1 to $2 per hour.

The city says the change will increase availability for on-street parking and create a higher turnover to make room for more vehicles and visitors to the area.

Demand-based pricing pilot projects were previously implemented at St. Boniface General Hospital and the Health Sciences Centre.

Amendmentsto the parking meter by-law have also been proposed, which would prohibit “re-metering,” reducing the maximum amount of time a vehicle can be parked in one space. Mobile food vendors would be exempt from this if they hold a valid mobile food vendor license.

The report will be put forward for approval at a meeting on Friday.
