A woman has been caught after setting a fire that nearly spread to nearby property.

Winnipeg police said the woman was walking down the back lane of College Avenue around 11 p.m. Wednesday when she set a garbage bin on fire. The fire was put out by firefighters before the flames spread to a nearby garage.

Winnipeg police tracked the woman, 46, down and arrested her. She has been charged with arson.

Meanwhile, police spent the past week tracking down a thief who had a thing for vehicle parts.

Police said a man broke into a compound over the week between July 14 and 21 in the 1000 block of Logan Avenue. Once there, he stole various car parts using a reciprocating saw and fleeing on a scooter.

Police said they tracked the man down near Sargeant Avenue and Maryland Street at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Shane Charles Corlett, 43, has been arrested and charged.
