Search Launched to Find Four Missing Boaters

August 3, 2012 10:57 AM | News

A search is underway for four overdue boaters who didn’t reach their destination of Norway House on Thursday.

RCMP say two men, a woman, and an eight-year-old child were on-board the boat that left Poplar River at about noon. They were scheduled to arrive by 4 p.m., but never did. Authorities were notified at about 11 p.m. and launched a search.

A Hercules aircraft was deployed from 17 Wing Winnipeg and was on scene at about 4 a.m. this morning, along with assistance from the Rescue Coordination Centre in Trenton and Canadian Coast Guard.

A search by boat and helicopter is being conducted and police will provide updates as they become available.

UPDATE: 8:43 p.m. — A Hercules aircraft located the boaters about 6:30 p.m. Friday and a radio was dropped to their location. All passengers were eventually rescued by a boat and were taken to the Poplar River nursing station. RCMP say it appears the boaters had mechanical difficulties.
