An interactive and evolving exhibition will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Winnipeg Art Gallery when it opens later this month.
The WAG Century will highlight the history of Canada’s oldest civic art gallery on August 18, running through September 2013.
“The WAG Century represents the first time the gallery has mounted an exhibition focusing on its own history,” said Andrew Kear, curator of Canadian historical art. “It is an exhibition that not only unveils the past but, just as importantly, helps build the momentum that propels the Winnipeg Art Gallery forward into its second century.”
The three different structures that have housed the WAG since 1912 will open the exhibition, which also pays tribute to its own staff, volunteers, donors and key individuals who have made the gallery a success over the years.
A series of displays will rotate through the exhibition throughout the year, which will share the stories behind some of the WAG’s 26,000-object collection.
