Man Drowns After Canoe Capsizes in Norway House

August 16, 2012 12:12 PM | News

An 18-year-old Norway House man drowned early Wednesday after the canoe he was on capsized.

RCMP say four people were on the boat at the time on Little Playgreen Lake, part of the Nelson River system. The canoe capsized in waves at about 4 a.m. near Laugher’s Lane in Norway House.

Three of the occupants on board were able to swim to shore, while the 18-year-old non-swimmer wasn’t able to make it.

His body was located submerged under water, and efforts to resuscitate him on shore were unsuccessful.

Police say life jackets were not used by anyone on the canoe and alcohol has not been ruled out as a factor. Foul play is not suspected.
