Construction is underway on the new 33,000-square-foot South District Police Station.

On Friday, Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz, Councillor Paula Havixbeck and Chief Keith McCaskill declared construction officially underway at the station, located at 2321 Grant Avenue.

The public-private partnership project, pegged at just over $18-million, is expected to be completed by the fall of 2013. It will replace two existing police stations built in the 1950s — District 2 (210 Lyle Street) and District 6 (1350 Pembina Highway).

“This station will enhance the police presence in this quadrant of Winnipeg and provide a new, modern workspace for our police officers, ensuring they have the tools they need to help make our city safer,” Havixbeck said.
