A fire in the city’s West End caused $1 million in damage early Saturday morning.

Crews responded to the 500 block of Notre Dame Avenue at about 2:55 a.m. and found a building that housed a residence and business engulfed in flames.

Police say the fire began in the rear of the building and quickly spread to two adjoining businesses. Freelance photographer Howard Wong said the businesses were Winnipeg Lock and Key, and Miranda Foods and Video.

“The smoke from the multiple building fire was so thick and choking. I had to move from my position after about 15 minutes,” Wong said.

Everyone in the building made it out safely without any injuries.

Due to the fire, westbound Notre Dame Avenue from Balmoral Street to Langside Street is temporarily closed.

The arson strike force is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators at (204) 986-6813 or CrimeStoppers at (204) 786-TIPS (8477).
