The first female to ever win a horse training title was crowned Sunday at Assiniboia Downs.

Shelley Brown, 39, has been training for four years and has K 5 Stables as her primary client. K 5 has won more races than any other owner.

The distinction comes as the Winnipeg track closed out its 55th season of live racing.

“We are very pleased with the season. Our on-track wagering numbers were encouraging and attendance was through the roof again,” said CEO Darren Dunn.

The 2013 season will see some changes at the track, as crews moved in last night to begin a Clubhouse renovation, which will see upgrades to the VLT area and race book.
