Canadian National is building a modern training centre in Winnipeg, which will house approximately 250 to 300 employees a week.

The company announced Friday its 100,000-square-foot facility will be built in Transcona. The area already houses CN’s heavy repair shops and rail yards.

A second similar facility will be built next year in Homewood, Illinois adjacent to CN’s Woodcrest Mechanical Shop.

“These facilities will be the centrepiece of CN’s enhanced railroader training program,” said Claude Mongeau, CN president and chief executive officer during an announcement Friday on Pandora Avenue. “The centres in both Canada and the United States will include a modern training curriculum and equipment to effectively train a new generation of railroaders.”

While representatives from all three levels of government were on hand for the announcement, CN says no government funding will go into the multi-million dollar facility.
