The city began conducting controlled burns in various natural areas, such as tall grass prairie remnants and prairie restorations, on Friday.
Until November 1, weather conditions permitting, the city will carry out the burns to preserve and restore prairies areas. Lack of fire allows weeds to invade endangered plant communities.
The burns will be conducted in minimal wind conditions with appropriate fire guards in place.
