Winnipeg Senior Charged with Old Age Security Fraud

October 3, 2012 8:44 AM | News

A 70-year-old Winnipeg woman is facing fraud charges after allegedly collecting more than $124,000 in Old Age Security benefits on behalf of her deceased mother.

RCMP say a 15-month investigation revealed that between July 1996 and November 2006, the woman failed to report her mother’s death, who was in the Philippines at the time. The woman also continued to file her mother’s tax returns.

Luisa Alcantara faces charges of fraud over $5,000, as well as fraud-related charges under the Old Age Security Act and Excise Tax Act.

Alcantara was released from custody and will appear in Winnipeg court on October 29.
