Movember’s 2012 campaign officially launched on Thursday, starting the month-long fundraiser to grow facial hair in support of fundraising to fight men’s cancers.

The Movember Winnipeg team kicked off their local campaign with members of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Blue Bomber Cheer Team at Rudy’s Eat and Drink on Graham Avenue.

Dave Wheeler of 92 CITI FM and Drew Kozub of Citytv were clean-shaven in preparation for growing their moustaches, along with Blue Bomber Chris Cvetkovic, and Winnipeg firefighter Dan Thomas. The initiative will also be supported by members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

“Last year was truly amazing — 246,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas from coast to coast shared their upper lips and their passion to make Canada Movember’s number one fundraising nation in the world,” said Pete Bombaci, national director of Movember Canada. “That support and passion makes it possible for us to diminish stigma, start conversations and make an everlasting impact on men’s health.”

Movember raised nearly $675,000 in Manitoba last year. The goal this year is $1 million provincially with 10,000 registered participants.

Anyone wanting to get involved, or to simply donate to the cause, can visit the Movember Winnipeg Facebook page.
