Prepare to pay double to park your car on some downtown streets.
Starting Tuesday, November 13, the City of Winnipeg will increase the rate for some on-street spaces to $2 from $1 per hour. The move is to make room for additional customers and visitors in high demand areas.
“The basic pricing principle for generating this turnover is that on-street parking should be more expensive over the longer term than off-street parking. A vacancy rate of 15 per cent will allow 9 out of 10 motorists to find on-street parking within three blocks of their destination without having to circle and look for an open space,” the city said on Thursday.
Areas affected by the rate increase (143 paystations) can be found on Winnipeg.ca.
The Winnipeg Parking Authority is also in the process of switching over 667 coin-operated machines to accept newer currency, such as the lighter loonies.
