The city cut down a massive 55-foot Colorado spruce tree on Sunday to be placed in front of City Hall.

The annual tradition of cutting down a local Christmas tree came from the yard of Mabel Lam of Niagara Street in River Heights.

The roughly 40-year-old tree has a trunk diameter of 26 inches at its base and is one of the tallest trees ever to be installed at 510 Main Street.

Crews lifted the tree by crane on a flatbed truck for transport, where it arrived at City Hall by around noon.

More than 9,000 multi-coloured LED lights will then be placed on it over the next several days.

The chosen tree was selected from 90 candidates.
