Weather guru David Phillips was in Winnipeg on Friday to share his expertise on Canada’s unpredictable climate.
The senior Environment Canada climatologist spoke on the last day of the Disaster Management Conference to about 300 people.
Phillips’ presentation, “Weird, Wild and Wacky: Is it Weather or Climate?” explained the wacky world of weather to emergency managers and other provincial staff who deal with natural disaster-related emergencies.
Using comical antidotes at times, Phillips said it’s in the DNA of Canadians to talk about the weather.
“Asking us to talk about the weather is like asking us to breathe,” Phillips said
“We watch it (the weather). We gab about it. We write about it… almost as if it’s going to run out tomorrow. And of course, it always does, only to be renewed by more weather.”
Weather geeks may also be interested in the “2013 Canadian Weather Trivia Calendar,” which Phillips compiled with weather stories and photos from around the country. The calendar is in stores now.
