An iconic Winnipeg restaurant is closing its doors after more than 81 years in business.

Kelekis Restaurant in the city’s North End announced Thursday that its last day would be January 30, 2013.

The restaurant is best known for its burgers and skinny fries, along with celebrity photographs on the walls of those who have eaten at the establishment.

Mary Kelekis, the current owner, will be celebrating her 88th birthday soon and needs a break from the daily routine, the restaurant said in an e-mail.

“So many friendships have been forged with customers that this is a very hard thing to contemplate. We will miss all the contacts and the conversations with all of you,” the statement read.

Chris Kelekis, Mary’s father, first opened the restaurant on June 10, 1944. He operated a food truck on the same location where the restaurant now sits in 1931.

The closure follows the shutting down of Papa George’s in Osborne Village in October, and the Wagon Wheel downtown in July.
