The co-founder of the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre has passed away.

Tom Hendry was 83.

Hendry, a Winnipeg native, was credited with being a pioneer in the regional theatre scene, establishing MTC with John Hirsch in 1957, and serving as general manager until 1963.

“Tom was still such a vital presence in our lives here, and we are sorry he won’t be here to remind us where we came from and where we ought to be going,” said MTC artistic director Steven Schipper. “He was our last link to this theatre’s birth, and we feel like adult orphans the world over: stunned by his departure, and grateful for all he did to bring us this far.”
