Major Power Outage Reported Downtown

December 13, 2012 5:09 PM | News

Parts of downtown Winnipeg are without power after an outage late this afternoon.

Manitoba Hydro reports the outage, which began around 4:15 p.m., is affecting a stretch of Portage Avenue, including the University of Winnipeg, Portage Place, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and the Quality Inn. Some residences along Ellice Avenue are also affected.

A cause of the outage hasn’t yet been determined.

The outage comes as rush hour traffic slows to a snail’s pace in many parts of the city. About five centimetres of snow fell on Winnipeg this afternoon, making for icy road conditions. The system that brought precipitation is moving eastward, according to Environment Canada.

The City of Winnipeg is currently plowing streets as an overnight parking ban is in place.

UPDATE: 7:40 p.m. — Power has been restored downtown. The cause was due to a fault in two underground feeder cables.
