Winnipeg Transit will offer free rides on New Year’s Eve again this year to offer the public a safe way to get home.

The city has partnered with Manitoba Public Insurance for the annual initiative, which applies to all regular and Handi-Transit service beginning at 7 p.m. on December 31.

The last buses leave downtown at approximately 1:38 a.m. and free rides will be offered until the end of service.

“We encourage people to plan ahead and make the right decision,” said MaryAnn Kempe, MPI’s vice-president of community and corporate affairs. “If you drink, don’t drive. There are options to get home safely — take advantage of the transit buses.”

Last year, more than 12,000 people rode the bus for free on New Year’s Eve in Winnipeg.
